W.O.W

Following the current political and social aspects of the society, it was almost impossible for me to overlook the importance and my personal interest in taking the Talking About Freedom FYS class. Because of the differences in cultural and educational backgrounds, the opinions within the society often differ, which is exactly where the concept of freedom plays a crucial role. I was fortunate enough to be in a group of wise and intelligent women with different cultural backgrounds to work with during this. After coming together for the first time, we decided that naming the group W.O.W (Women of Wisdom) would best represent us as individuals. By us, I mean Haley, Anna, Jordan, Naj and myself. Hayley is from Pennsylvania, currently majoring in exercise science. On campus she lives in UC 2. She is a very athletic and outgoing person. She played soccer, softball, track and basketball in high school. Following her college education, she sees herself as a physician assistant. Her favorite food is lobster tales. One of the reasons why she chose High Point was her desire to be farther away from home. Since she also enjoys the beach, North Carolina was the best option. Anna is from Charlotte, North Carolina, currently majoring in communications, spends the majority of her life on campus in Blessing surrounded by friends. She likes to travel, which allowed her to visit Mexico in the near past. Because of her amazing past experience with traveling, she is planing on going to London this summer. She is a very social and outgoing person, which doesn't interfere with her love for tater tots. The biggest reason that stimulated her towards choosing this class is her love for law. She took law classes in High School and is interested in the 'freedom' aspect of the class. Jordan is from a small town called Moorpark in California, just 30 minutes outside LA. She is a beach lover, which probably determined the location of her home. At HPU she is majoring in strategic communications and Spanish, while also being a star on the dance team. She lives in UC2 and enjoys pasta, reading and traveling. One of the main reasons why she decided to attend High Point was because of her desire to become independent, while being away from home and experience a colder environment. Naj is from Bridgeport, Connecticut, majoring in Bio Pre-Med. She is a successful member of the track and field team, specializing in running sprints for 60 m, 100m, 200m, 4x1 meters. Her favorite food is chicken Alfredo or "anything Alfredo". The reason why she chose to be in this class is related to her interest in learning more about the fundamentals of civil rights movement, African-American cultural development and the way it is affecting the concept of freedom these days. I believe that working in a group with such amazing young women will make my experience in this class meaningful and engaging. I know that each of them will help me to stay interested, motivated and educated, which at the end will lead us to an undeniably successful experience.
